Biopsy and Bone Marrow Examination

Biopsy

Doctors need to be sure that your disease is a Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH), because they must choose the correct treatment. They usually decide to do a test of an affected part of the body. This is called a biopsy. A small piece of affected tissue is removed and then examined under a microscope. This gives a closer look at what's going on inside your body.

Doctors performing a biopsy look quite funny. They wear all this stuff in order to prevent you from getting an infection caused by germs getting out of their nose or mouth or falling down from their hair.

You will be given a medicine called anesthesia that will make you fall asleep and keep you comfortable while the biopsy is done.

Bone Marrow Examination

If your blood counts are not good the doctors may need to examine your bone marrow. To do this the doctor will take out a little fluid bone marrow with a small needle from your pelvic bone. You will receive medication so that you cannot feel this prick.
